Talking about Your Generation: Plastic Surgery in Your 20s
By David Passaretti, MD on April 24, 2015
At the practice of Dr. David Passaretti, many of our patients are concerned about whether they are in the “right” age group to undergo a certain plastic surgery procedure. One patient might wonder whether she is too young to have a face lift while another might fret that she is slightly beyond the age of someone who should be considering breast augmentation. Our answer is almost inevitably the same. The right age to undergo any plastic surgery procedure is the age that you are when you are psychologically prepared and physically healthy enough to undergo that plastic surgery procedure. If you are a good candidate for the procedure, and it helps you feel better about yourself, then you certainly have no reason to hesitate.
While you may wonder whether you are too young to undergo plastic surgery in your 20s, many of our Fairfield patients begin to explore the possibilities of plastic surgery at precisely your age. Again, as long as it helps you feel better about yourself - and you are not considering it because you are being pressured by someone else - changing your appearance through plastic surgery can be a perfectly healthy endeavor. It isn’t for everybody, of course, which is why Dr. Passaretti takes the time to speak with each patient confidentially during a one-on-one consultation before he or she commits to a procedure. However, if you decide to proceed with plastic surgery, you will be entrusting your appearance to a skilled plastic surgeon.
Which procedures are most commonly performed on patients in their twenties?
Most patients in their twenties do not require significant facial rejuvenation, although some people begin showing early signs of aging on their faces in their mid-twenties. In general, patients in their twenties do not require facial plastic surgery quite yet; however, some may benefit from injectable anti-wrinkle treatments such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, which is ideal for softening the wrinkles that form at the corners of the eyes. These injections last on average for three to six months and can be repeated as necessary.
More often, patients in their twenties opt to undergo plastic surgery procedures that alter some feature of their faces or bodies with which they are dissatisfied, such as their noses or their breasts. Some patients choose to undergo rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping surgery, as early as in their teens. Likewise, a great many of our patients who undergo breast augmentation range between the ages of 18 and 29, making it one of the most popular procedures among women under 30. Almost as popular among younger women, however, is breast reduction, a procedure that alleviates the discomfort that accompanies disproportionately large and heavy breasts.
Ultimately, any of the procedures that we offer, from liposuction and abdominoplasty to neck lift and blepharoplasty, can be performed on patients in their twenties as long as they are suitable candidates. There is no such thing as a procedure that is “off limits” to someone in his or her twenties - only good candidates and poor candidates.
