Addressing Asymmetry with Breast Augmentation

Woman with a full bustlineWhen the breasts are small, asymmetrical, or misshapen, women may not feel confident about their appearance. Women who want to improve the aesthetics of the breasts should consider breast augmentation.

Breast augmentation can increase the size of the breasts, improve their shape, and address asymmetry. Board-certified plastic surgeon David Passaretti performs breast augmentation for asymmetry to help our Darien, CT patients achieve a shapely, even bustline that complements the rest of the figure.

How Common Is Asymmetry?

Breast asymmetry is common. Some women have breasts that develop differently from one another and have slight irregularities between their size or shape. Other women notice that differences develop after they have gone through certain life experiences, such as pregnancy, breast feeding, or weight loss.

No matter what caused the asymmetry, women should rest assured that they are not alone. Asymmetry is not unusual. And, fortunately, it is a condition that can be corrected through plastic surgery.

Correcting Asymmetry

The first step in correcting asymmetry is determining the ideal breast size. The ideal size will be different for each woman, and will depend on factors such as body proportions and personal preference.

Essentially, Dr. Passaretti will help our Fairfield County patients determine if the smaller breast needs to be made larger, or if the larger breast should be made smaller. If patients wish to make the larger breast smaller, breast reduction surgery can be performed. When patients choose to go with a larger breast size, as is often the case, breast augmentation is the ideal treatment option.

Implant Options

When addressing asymmetry with breast augmentation, a single implant can be placed or implants can be placed in both breasts.

  • Single implant placement: If the patient is happy with the size and shape of the larger breast, a single breast implant can be placed to bring the size of the smaller breast closer to the size of the larger one. In these situations, Dr. Passaretti will recommend an implant that closely replicates the look and feel of the natural breast, so that the two breasts look uniform after treatment. However, the downside of this option is that the breasts may sag at different rates, resulting in asymmetry in the future.
  • Double implant placement: Many patients opt to have two implants placed, so that the size of both breasts can be enhanced. When two implants are placed, a larger implant will be placed in the smaller breast. The goal is to make the volume of the breasts match.

Prior to performing breast augmentation, Dr. Passaretti will go over all treatment options with patients so that they play a role in choosing the size, shape, and type of breast implant that is right for them.
