Rhinoplasty for the Nostrils

Examining a patient's noseWhen people think of a rhinoplasty (nose job), they usually think of straightening a broken nose or removing a bump from the bridge. Cosmetic nasal surgery can certainly accomplish both. Yet the surgery can also be performed to revise the shape of the nostrils. Given the prominence of the nose, revising nostril shape can make a major difference to your appearance.

Dr. David Passaretti and the team at his Darien, CT plastic surgery practice would like to consider nostril correction and revision. We’ll note various problems that it can address and broadly discuss how the surgical procedure is performed.

Different Issues That Affect the Nostrils

When it comes to issues with the appearance of the nostrils, there are numerous aesthetic flaws that may be present. Some common problems include:

  • Large Nostrils - When nostrils are too prominent, they can draw attention away from other facial features.
  • Narrow Nostrils - Small nostrils can be just as noticeable as large nostrils since they throw off balance and symmetry of the nose.
  • Asymmetrical Nostrils - On the note of symmetry, two nostrils that are unevenly shaped or sized could be a serious cosmetic distraction.
  • Barely Visible Nostrils - Sometimes the skin around the nostrils or the nasal tip hangs low, which obscures the nostrils and the columella (the skin between the nostrils).
  • Extremely Prevalent Nostrils - When the angle of a person’s nose is too upturned, it can make their nostrils seem too prevalent and even permanently flared.

We should note that these issues may be the result of genetics, illness, or injury.

How Rhinoplasty Can Help

A rhinoplasty can revise various structures of the nose, the bridge, the nasal tip, or the nostrils themselves. Cosmetic surgeons have numerous ways of revising the shape of the nose and improving its overall appearance.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Nostril Correction?

Good candidates for nostril correction are people who feel self-conscious about the look of their nose. They should be in good overall health and not suffer from any sort of medical conditions that would make the rhinoplasty procedure a risk to general wellness.

During the consultation process at our Darien cosmetic surgery center, we will be able to go over all of the risks and benefits of the procedure and determine if a patient’s situation can be addressed through a rhinoplasty.

What to Expect During Cosmetic Nostril Surgery

There are two different ways to perform rhinoplasty. During a closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made within the nostrils. During an open rhinoplasty, an incision is made along the columella, allowing plastic surgeons to better access the structures of the nose.

Whether you undergo an open or closed rhinoplasty, the procedure is performed with the patient under general anesthesia. Reshaping the nostrils themselves will typically involve removing tissue and/or placing sutures to help reshape the existing tissues. For issues with the angle of the nasal tip, surgeons will similarly remove tissue and alter the position of the existing tissue to enhance shape and appearance.

The Results of Nostril Rhinoplasty

The results of nostril correction can be dramatic, especially when surgeons are able to achieve natural-looking results. Thanks to our surgical team’s expertise, incisions and scarring are well concealed. Patients experience greater self-confidence thanks to the nostril revision.
