Benefits of Breast Reduction
A breast reduction procedure can improve a patient's quality of life by offering both medical and aesthetic benefits. In terms of physical benefits, breast reduction can alleviate the discomfort associated with having overly large breasts and help to improve posture. Additionally, this procedure can make it easier for both female and male patients to exercise and perform their favorite activities. A breast reduction can enhance a patient's appearance by creating a more proportional bust and allowing for new options in terms of potential clothing choices. When combined with a breast lift, breast reduction can achieve even more dramatic aesthetic results.
Breast Reduction Candidacy
You may be a good candidate for a breast reduction if you:
- Suffer from pain in your neck, back, or shoulders due to a heavy bosom
- Experience deep grooves in your shoulders and back from ill-fitting bras
- Find it difficult to exercise or perform everyday activities due to overly large breasts
- Have asymmetrical breasts or those that seem too large for your body
- Suffer from skin irritation as a result of chafing
- Experience significant breast sagging
In order to qualify for surgery, patients should be at least 18 years old and have fully developed breast tissue. While the vast majority of breast reduction candidates are female, Dr. Passaretti can also perform this procedure for men who have developed excess breast tissue due to weight fluctuations or hormonal issues. This is typically referred to as gynecomastia surgery. We can review your candidacy for breast reduction surgery and create a customized treatment plan during a personal consultation.
The Breast Reduction Procedure
To begin your breast reduction procedure, we will first administer general anesthesia. Dr. Passaretti will then create an incision circling your areola. In some cases, we may extend the incision down your breast and across its bottom crease (known as an anchor incision), depending on the amount of adjustment you require. Next, Dr. Passaretti will remove tissue and fat from within your breast using a scalpel or liposuction to sculpt your breasts into a smaller, more proportionate shape and size. Dr. Passaretti will then reposition the nipple higher up on the breast before closing your incisions. While the specifics of recovery will depend on the patient, you will need to schedule downtime for at least a week or two after your procedure.
