The Blepharoplasty Procedure

The surgery usually takes about one to two hours from start to finish.

Upper Blepharoplasty

During upper eyelid surgery, Dr. Passaretti trims excess skin on the upper lids that may droop or sag into the line of vision. He removes unnecessary fat deposits and lifts the existing skin to create a more rested appearance. Depending on your care plan, we will start by giving you either anesthesia or sedation. Then, during upper eyelid surgery, a small, discreet incision is made along the upper crease or curvature of the eyelid. Dr. Passaretti then trims excess skin as well as removes any unnecessary fat deposits and lifts the existing skin to create a firmer, smoother, more rested appearance. Finally, dissolvable stitches, or sometimes stitches that need to be removed later, will be placed with care to minimize the appearance of scars as much as possible.

Lower Blepharoplasty

During lower eyelid surgery, anesthesia or sedation will be given as predetermined during consultation. Dr. Passaretti will then remove pockets of fat and excess skin that are causing bags under the eyes. If the problem is that the eye area looks “hollow” or “sunken-in,” Dr. Passaretti can redistribute fat to plump up the area. He may also tighten the muscles and remaining skin for optimal results. Often with lower eyelid surgery, incisions can be made on the inside of the lower eyelid, which are typically closed with dissolvable stitches. If skin is to be removed or tightened, access from the outside is required, and a tiny incision is made just millimeters below the lower lash line. This may be closed with either dissolvable or removable sutures.

Combined Blepharoplasty

Many patients who are considering both upper and lower surgery opt to combine the two surgeries. Most of the techniques involved in each individual surgery remain the same. Combined eyelid surgery is beneficial and convenient because you can save time and money by only needing to undergo one sedation and one recovery period.

Results, Recovery, and Aftercare

Blepharoplasty recovery usually takes about one to two weeks. Immediately after surgery, your eyes may feel sore or tight. Some expected sensations and side effects after surgery include watery eyes, sensitivity to light, swelling or puffiness, itchiness, bruising, and blurry vision from eye-safe lubricating ointment used during the procedure. All of these symptoms should resolve on their own within about two to three weeks, and you will be given instructions for icing and proper cleaning of the area. For some patients, slight swelling may last as long as 6 to 8 weeks. You should avoid wearing contact lenses for at least two weeks after surgery to prevent disturbing the healing process. Final results are usually visible within 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.
