Lip Implants Can Add Volume and Shape to Thin Lips

Among the various lip augmentation options Dr. David Passaretti offers at his Darien, CT, practice are lip implants. Where fillers can temporarily fill out the smile, these implants are a long-lasting solution for patients who are unhappy with the plumpness or shape of their lips. During a consultation, Dr. Passaretti will carefully assess the current condition of your smile and work with you to determine which method is best suited to your desired outcomes.

Why Choose Lip Implants?

Unlike fillers and injections, lip implants can dramatically enhance the volume and shape of your lips with more permanent results. Fillers are absorbed and expelled from the body over time through natural processes and usually require follow-up treatments to maintain the best results. In contrast, lip implants require only a single treatment with results that can last for many years to come.

Lip implants can dramatically increase the plumpness, youth, and symmetry of your lips to provide balance for your other features.

The implants themselves are biocompatible sacs filled with saline, a mixture of salt and water, which should not lose shape or volume over time. However, while the results are usually more refined and predictable than those achieved through fillers, they must be placed surgically for the best effect. Lip implants also consequently have a higher risk of complications than fillers.

As a board-certified surgeon, though, Dr. Passaretti can minimize these risks so that you can achieve a dramatic transformation. Incisions are strategically placed on the insides of your lips where scars will not be noticeable. Dr. Passaretti can discuss the benefits of both fillers and implants during your consultation and recommend the treatment most appropriate for your cosmetic goals.

Are You a Good Candidate?

Lip implants are most often recommended to address both naturally thin lips or age-related creases along the borders of your mouth. However, in order to qualify for lip implants, you must be healthy enough to undergo cosmetic surgery. During your consultation, Dr. Passaretti will review your medical history to determine whether you are a good candidate for lip implants.

What to Expect During Surgery

Although lip fillers do not require extensive preparation prior to the procedure, patients who are receiving lip implants should carefully follow the pre-operative instructions provided by Dr. Passaretti. These may include:

  • Stopping or starting certain medications
  • Fasting the day before surgery
  • Arranging for aftercare
  • Quitting smoking to improve healing

In most cases, this simple procedure is completed within an hour. In order to help you feel comfortable, Dr. Passaretti will place you under general anesthesia or IV sedation. Once you are sedated, he will create several small incisions on the inside of the lips, through which he can insert the implants. The doctor will carefully and strategically place the implants where they can most naturally enhance the lips. He can then suture the incisions shut.
