Boost Your Confidence in Your Appearance with Ear Surgery
Are you unhappy with the look of your ears? Whether you have been dissatisfied with their appearance since you were a child or have sustained an injury, Dr. David Passaretti can help. Dr. Passaretti offers ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, to correct several types of aesthetic imperfections. Otoplasty can reshape or realign ears that are too large or protrude too far from the head. It can also correct deformities in the ears' cartilage or skin due to lacerations or other trauma. Are You a Candidate?
There are several types of cosmetic imperfections that lead patients to consider otoplasty. This is one type of plastic surgery, like rhinoplasty, that is sometimes performed on children as well as adults. Candidates are generally concerned with one of several factors:
- Overly large ears
- Misshapen ears
- Cauliflower ear (when cartilage in the ear breaks down after trauma)
- Sagging or large earlobes
- A deformed ear missing some components, such as shell ear
- Excessively protruding ears
Like any other facial feature, our ears add distinct character to our appearance. During your initial consultation with Dr. Passaretti, you will discuss your unique concerns and treatment goals. By understanding what type of look you are trying to achieve, Dr. Passaretti can individualize your surgical plan for the best results.
Before your surgery is performed, Dr. Passaretti will apply a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort. He will create incisions either behind your ears or discreetly hidden within their natural contours.
To correct protruding, Dr. Passaretti will reshape your cartilage through incisions made behind your ears. He may use stitches to hold your ears closer to your head. In many cases, bringing your ears closer toward your head can effectively make them look smaller and less noticeable.
Reshaping the Ears
If your ears are disproportionately large in comparison to the rest of your head and features, Dr. Passaretti may recommend reshaping them. During the procedure, he can remove cartilage and trim excess skin around your ears. Removing excess skin is commonly recommended for patients with earlobes that have become stretched over time. Once these revisions are complete, Dr. Passaretti will carefully close the incisions.
There are several types of ear deformities that can be corrected through the careful manipulation or removal of cartilage. If you suffer from cauliflower ear, which occurs when fluid collects between the cartilage and skin in your ear, Dr. Passaretti will drain the fluid. He will suture the surrounding tissue to help prevent the return of fluid.
For patients with conditions like shell ear, a substantial amount of reconstruction may be necessary. Some patients will require tissue grafts, while others may receive specialized implants. Dr. Passaretti can discuss your unique case and treatment options to help restore your appearance and confidence.
