If you are looking to diminish early signs of aging and refresh your appearance, Dr. David Passaretti offers a series of treatments combining glycolic peels and photofacials at his Darien, CT, practice. This combination can provide significant cosmetic effects with no downtime. Because peels and photofacials will address different layers of your skin, the two procedures can eliminate various types of blemishes and provide more dramatic results. Your combined treatment regimen can leave you with softer, more even, and younger-looking skin. Contact our office to find out if these combined treatments are a good option for you.

What Is a Glycolic Peel?

A glycolic peel is a light chemical peel that can reduce fine lines and other blemishes by stimulating your body to shed old, damaged skin cells. We apply glycolic acid, derived from sugar cane, to the treatment area. The solution is safe and will only cause the top layer of damaged skin to slough off over several days. The skin below can appear younger, smoother, and more supple. Glycolic peels involve minor discomfort and no downtime.

What Is a Photofacial?

During an IPL (intense pulsed light) Photofacial, we will direct high-energy lasers at the treatment area. The light penetrates to the lower layers of your skin. As it does, the energy can shrink blood vessels and increase collagen production for lasting results.

A photofacial can address deeper blemishes than a glycolic peel, and is particularly useful in addressing sun damage, uneven pigmentation, and blotchy skin. Because this treatment does not remove any tissue, it involves less discomfort and no downtime, unlike other laser skin treatments. Most patients experience only minor redness after their treatment. Alternating peels with photofacials is a common and highly effective option. Because they target different levels of tissue, the two treatments can address multiple concerns at once.

Combining Treatments for Stunning Results

We generally alternate these procedures over a total of six treatments with three glycolic peels and three photofacials. Alternating peels with photofacials is a common and highly effective option. Because they target different levels of tissue, the two treatments can address multiple concerns at once. The procedures are typically performed with one treatment every two weeks. Depending on how your skin reacts to treatment, the timeline may be altered.

The most common side effects are mild redness and swelling, but these should subside quickly. Dr. Passaretti will provide tips on how to best care for your skin, and speed healing between procedures. He can also provide lotions and creams to help with any discomfort. Throughout all of your treatment, and after, your skin will be more sensitive to the sun. You will need to wear moisturizer and broad-spectrum sunscreen, and avoid large amounts of direct sunlight. Photofacials cannot be combined with deeper peels in such quick succession. Because our other chemical peels affect deeper skin layers, they require more time for recovery.
